How the Sport and Wellness Hub is already benefiting our region

Our Sport and Wellness Hub has had a positive impact on our region before it’s even finished. Willmott Dixon, our contractors for the Hub, have used the site to train, educate and engage with people from all over the local area, an effort that was recognised when they were recently given the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Promoting Opportunity.

Here are just a few of the things that earned the team their award:

Work experience

Students from several local schools are on site, gaining valuable work experience in the construction industry. They’ve had chance to look at all aspects of the construction process, and have been offered the opportunity to choose which areas of work they’d like to investigate more thoroughly.

A student from Solihull College, said:

“I’ve learned about the materials needed and spoken to people about the work they do. There’s a lot of stuff to do to get a building complete!”

Traineeship programme

Willmott Dixon have used the Hub to pilot a new traineeship programme, offering 15 young people not currently in employment, education or training the opportunity to gain valuable life and employability skills.

Enrichment programme

Working with Etone College in Nuneaton, our contractors have offered an enrichment programme to a group of year 8 students. The students visited the site, and had a Q&A session with the team before going away to work on their own projects, designing, planning and constructing bridges.

This is all accredited by the Industrial Cadets Programme, meaning all pupils receive a certificate and badge once they’ve completed it.

Site visits

Over 250 people from educational institutions (including our own) have visited the Sport and Wellness Hub site to date. That includes the recent Open Doors event, which saw some of our own staff taking a look around the site.
