Professor Malcolm Green, Hon DSc

Professor Malcolm Green is an internationally renowned chemist. He pioneered the development of the organometallic chemistry of the transition metals and was the first to demonstrate the intermolecular insertion of transition metals into carbon-hydrogen bonds (‘C-H bond activation’). His mechanism for the polymerization of alkenes (eg polythene) is the standard taught in textbooks. He developed a new taxonomy of chemical compounds – the Covalent Bond Classification. In the 1990s, he initiated fundamental studies into carbon nanotubes and other carbon nanomaterials. He also worked in the field of heterogeneous catalysts of hydrocarbon reactions leading to the discovery of highly selective metal carbide catalysts for the catalytic partial oxidation of methane. This resulted in the formation in 2006 of the highly successful spin-off company, Oxford Catalysts plc.

Malcolm Green received his BSc from Acton Technical College in 1956, and his PhD from Imperial College London in 1959. After two years at Cambridge University, he was appointed a Septcentenary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford in 1963; a lectureship followed in 1965. In 1989, he was appointed Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, Head of Oxford’s Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory and Fellow of St Catherine’s College. In 2004 he became an Emeritus Research Professor and continues his work with a substantial research group. His career also included many distinguished visiting positions at universities around the world.

Professor Green has received numerous awards, including the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Medals in Inorganic Chemistry, Transition Chemistry, and Organometallic Chemistry, the Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson Medal and Prize, 2000, and the American Chemical Society’s Annual Awards for Inorganic Chemistry and Organometallic Chemistry.
