Notes on Pine
N.B. pine on the IT Services Linux Desktop is actually alpine.
On machines running the IT Services Linux Desktop, alpine will configured itself to work with the University email system via IMAPS the first time you run it.
- Copies of messages you send will be saved in the Sent Items folder in your University email account. This is the same folder in which Outlook Web Access and Outlook store copies of message you send.
- Draft messages will be save in the Drafts folder in your University email account. This is the same folder in which Outlook Web App and Outlook store copies of draft messages.
- By default alpine will not look for mail folders in your home directory, only in your University email account. If you wish for alpine to look for mail folders in your home directory then you must add a new folder collection. From the main alpine menu press S then L then A. Enter a Nickname of your choosing and in the Path field enter the name of the directory the contains your mail folders.
Microsoft Exchange's IMAP implementation sometimes reports the size of a message incorrectly. When alpine saves a message it checks the size of the saved message against the size of the original. If the IMAP server has reported the size incorrectly the two values do not match and you will see the error "Message to save shrank!" You should still be able to save the message successfully.
If alpine is displaying messages with the 'wrong' time, e.g. the time on the message is several hours in the future, it is probably not adjusting the displayed time to the local timezone. Go to Main Menu > Settings > Config and enable the setting 'Convert Dates To Localtime' (Use the whereis function and search for 'localtime' to locate the option quickly).
