Term 1 workshops - 2021/22

Beyond the classroom: young people and deprivation

This session will offer a perspective on how growing up in challenging circumstances shapes the outlook and perspectives of our young people. What does deprivation in modern Britain look like and feel like for many children? How does it shape their life chances? As university teaching staff, are we aware of the struggles (and successes) experienced by the young people who live a "stone's throw" from our place of work? After many years promoting Chemistry to young people on behalf of Warwick University and the Royal Society of Chemistry, Nick is now based in a school serving an area of severe social deprivation.

SoTL: What is it? How do I do it?

This workshop is for anyone who has asked these questions about the Scholarship of Teaching of Learning (SoTL). Rather than engaging in the well-worn debates, the workshop will start from the premise that we are all SoTL practitioners – even if we don’t know it yet. We will redefine SoTL as an inclusive, spectrum-based activity in which we are all engaging to varying degrees. As an interactive and practical-focused workshop, you will be supported to consider your current SoTL activities and identify steps that will move you further along the spectrum towards more structured evidence-based inquiries. With TEALFest 2022 (Technology Enhanced Active Learning Festival) coming soon, we will also consider how to frame SoTL activities so that they can be shared at events like this to inform others’ teaching practices too.

Date: Wednesday 3rd November

"Wait! It's not a test?!" Alternative Assessments - Planning and Prep

Most students know how to prepare for a test or an essay, and are reasonably proficient at doing so, but what happens when they are assessed in other ways? How might it add to the cognitive load of assessment and what can practitioners do to mitigate this? This session will examine a variety of alternative methods of summative assessment and explore the ways in which we we might prepare our students for them.

Date: Tuesday 9th November

Time: 1pm-2pm

Effective blended learning: What have we learnt from students?

Lory Barile is currently leading on an IATL funded pedagogic research project aimed at understanding students’ engagement with online resources pre/post COVID-19. Transdisciplinary Pedagogies

This workshop will explore the opportunities and challenges posed by transdisciplinarity for teaching and learning. We’ll consider how disciplinarity informs how we learn to learn, as well as how traversing disciplinary boundaries prompts reflexivity about teaching and learning. Finally, we’ll think about how a democracy of disciplinary approaches can be harnessed to create more democratic educational environments. The workshop is open to teaching staff from all disciplinary backgrounds.
