New York State Reformatory, Elmira

The New York State Reformatory at Elmira, New York, opened in 1876 and was pioneering in its emphasis on the rehabilitation of the offender. It provided educational classes, vocational training and military drill.

These nine photographs include an external view of the institution, and images of prisoners in classes, at work and in military formation.
