New York State Reformatory for Women

The New York State Reformatory for Women, Bedford, NY, first opened in 1901 as a reformatory for women between the ages of 15 and 30. It now operates as the Taconic Correctional Facility.

The thirteen photographs reproduced here include general views of the buildings, the construction of a stairway to the 'upper campus', inmates outside the new pig pen and filling in a ditch, the drama club performing the court scene in Alice in Wonderland, the officers' orchestra, a gymnastics class, and an inmate's bedroom and dining room in Huntington Cottage.
