Cafe Bar barista brews up a Gold win at The University Catering Awards

We are thrilled to announce that Dana-Maria Danut, one of our baristas in Cafe Bar, won gold in the TUCO 2017 Barista Skills Competition.

The competitions are an annual skills competition organised by The University Caterers Organisation (TUCO). Delegates from universities across the UK visited the two day event here at Warwick to compete against each other in a wide range of activities.

Dana had to compete in a live ten minute competition producing two espressos, two cappuccinos and finally two espresso-based, non-alcoholic speciality drinks. The preparation was overseen by the expert gaze of a table of coffee connoisseurs, who then sampled and judged the creations.

The University of Warwick was also represented in the Barista Skills Competition by Mirko DeLorenzis from Cafe Oculus. He displayed cool, calm coffee making skills during his live ten minute competition.

We are extremely proud of both Dana and Mirko for representing the university at such a prestigious event.

More wins for Warwick

The Barista Skills Competition was just one part of an exciting event which also saw delegates competing in speed cooking challenges, bar skills competitions and cook and serve challenges.

A Gala Awards dinner took place last night in a packed Butterworth Hall at the Warwick Arts Centre where the winners were announced. As well as Dana’s Gold Barista win, the University of Warwick also had Gold and Silver wins in a range of other categories:

Category Position Competitor(s)
Cook & Serve Challenge Gold Phil Thorpe, Zoran Zivkovic & Samantha Chick
Campus Speed Cook Challenge Silver David Webb
Cookie Challenge Gold Best in Class Hayley Fry
Decorative Exhibit Gold Best in Class Mary Fry
Plated Main Course Gold Best in Class Peter Fry
Cup Cake Challenge Merit Hayley Fry

Congratulations to all our winners and everyone that took part. Here's looking forward to another round of culinary competition and barista battles next year
