Edinburgh Trip

Each year, a full calendar of UK coach trips is organised to give you the chance to experience many different sides of British culture. You can see which trips are coming up next term, here.

In February, a group of 94 students visited Scotland’s capital and enjoyed two nights’ accommodation, a city tour, a restaurant meal and return coach travel.

edinburgh5.jpgStudents left Warwick bright and early on Friday morning, arriving in Edinburgh for 1:30pm for the first activity of the trip, a tour led by Stuart Usher of the famous Usher family. The journey began at Edinburgh Castle, taking in the Old Town, narrow cobbled alleyways and statues of famous figures such as Adam Smith, John Knox and David Hume. A unique part of the tour was to learn about the graveyard watch towers set up throughout Edinburgh in the 1800s in response to the regular grave robberies. Due to the advancement of medical research at the time, doctors were in great need of corpses to study which gave rise to this unique trade. After a fascinating few hours, the tour concluded over in Edinburgh’s New Town, the city’s 18th century solution to the slum-like conditions of the Old Town and today stands as the largest area of unbroken Georgian architecture in the world.

Students were able to navigate the city at their own pace on the following day. Many climbed the famous Arthur’s seat to take in the incredible views afforded at the top while others visited Edinburgh Castle, Camera Obscura (easily one of the UK’s best optical illusion museums) and the many locations that inspired JK Rowling during her early days of writing. An evening meal was enjoyed together followed by more free time before meeting the next day at 3pm to head back to Warwick.

Fear not - if you haven't tried a trip before, there are still plenty in the calendar for next term! The next trip takes in Castleton & Bakewell, so book now at warwick.ac.uk/trips for memories that will last a lifetime...
