Student Profile: David Szocs

Even after only a few weeks, I feel like I have a family here in Warwick (my flatmates). We really on each-other, have fun, but also support one another. The people here are incredible, and I can't believe how lucky I am to have met them.

Discover David's journey at Warwick and what led them to apply for the LLB Law.

How did you find out about Warwick?

I first heard about Warwick from one of my sister's friends. He got 45 points on his IB exam, and was really excited to study here. In some ways, I looked up to him. He was a approachable and smart guy, that knew how to balance friends and academic interests. He said that Warwick propelled him to new heights, inspired him, and made him question principles and theories he never considered before.

Did you consider studying anywhere else? What made you choose Warwick?

For 2 reasons: firstly, the university is world renowned. The amazing ranking the university has provides evidence of this. Also the fact that so many people from different parts of the world come here to study, because they know how incredible the teaching is here. Secondly, because it is a university city. I feel safer here, and more comfortable than I would studying in London. Also, the fact that it is a university city means that there is a stronger community.

How did you feel to be awarded a scholarship?

I was never happier. Firstly, I was so thankful. I felt lucky, and honoured getting the scholarship. I felt motivated to work hard, and make sure that I really deserved the scholarship. But also, I was relieved more than anything. I didn't want to put pressure on my parents and extended family to help finance my studies. If it weren't for the scholarship, I likely wouldn't be studying here.

Who was the first person you told when you received the news about your scholarship and how did they react?

I told my sister. We were having lunch together and suddenly I got the email. First, I became really nervous. I did not know what to expect. But after opening the email, and seeing that I got the scholarship, I was blown away. I called my parents right away, then my grandma, and my aunt and uncle. My whole family was hoping I would get it - and I am glad I did.

How did you apply and did anyone help you with your application form and visa application?

Yes, my father helped me with the visa application form. It was a rigorous process, that required information stretching back many years. Thus, we had to go through old albums and photos to pin point when we traveled to each country. However, my father only looked over all the information I had put in the end. He did not sit with me to fill out the visa application for hours. The only difficulty I had was waiting to get a response - I was quite nervous about.

What was your first impression of Warwick when you first walked around campus?

I was blown away. I knew that the campus would be beautiful, but I had no idea that it was so modern. Even the accommodation I am staying at right now had only been built a few years ago. Especially the gym on campus. It has so many activities, that I managed to try sports I never had the chance to try before (like rock climbing).

What is the best thing about Warwick?

The best thing about Warwick is definitely the people. I have never seen such a motivated, open-minded and kind group of people in one place in my life. Every person here is worthy of studying here, and I felt so welcomed coming here. Even as an international student, I fit in right away. Everyone here inspires me to work harder and think differently, which I really value.

What is the worst thing?

The only aspect here in Warwick that bothers me is that we are from Cambridge (where my sister studies). However, I think that this is just a personal obstacle that I have to face. Other than that, there is nothing that bothers me here.

How is your accommodation?

My accommodation is on campus, and its simply amazing. I am 5 minutes away from the Gym, and only 15 minutes away from the center of campus. Everything is so close, and simply beautiful. As I previously mentioned, I live in a bloc that was recently constructed, and the kitchen and room are properly furnished and clean. My room even has a whiteboard, which blew me away, as I never thought that the university would be so considerate.

Are you a member of any societies?

Yes, I am apart of many societies, such as: Law, International and European Law, Real Estate, Finance, Hungarian, Romanian and a few more. The events each society hosts are both educational, and also fun. The parties are simply amazing, and I always have a great time. As for the educational aspect, I now understand on a deeper level what my course is like, challenges that I will face, but more importantly what I could after finishing my degree. Although I had a rough idea of this before coming to study here, I now know for sure.

What are your plans when you graduate?

After I graduate, I hope to work in a law firm in London. I am not sure if I wish to pursue human rights law, or work in a commercial law firm, but either way I know that I want to stay here, and help people. I am in love with England, and I wish to stay here and practice law for as long as I can.

What would you say to someone considering applying for an Undergraduate Global Excellence scholarship at Warwick, what would it be?

Definitely try and apply. The questions may look intimidating at the beginning, but think about them, and be honest. It is quite obvious when someone is being superficial, and the genuine and raw applications always do better. To add to this, try to stand out. A lot of people are interested in your course, but how do your life experiences prepare/motivate you more than the other people applying? Also, be responsible and don't leave it to the last moment.

What one thing makes you happy about Warwick?

As I mentioned before, the people. Even after only a few weeks, I feel like I have a family here in Warwick (my flatmates). We really on each-other, have fun, but also support one another. The people here are incredible, and I can't believe how lucky I am to have met them.
