COLONIAL HANGOVER: STUDENT CONFERENCE MENTORING SCHEME
You are invited to participate in the Colonial Hangover Student Conference. This is a wonderful opportunity for Year 11/12 students to learn valuable research and presentations skills, engage with current academic debate, meet world leading academics and get a taste of the vibrant and engaging life at the University of Warwick. With the support of current undergraduate mentors and academic staff members, students will have the opportunity to conduct research on the theme of ‘Colonial Hangover’ and explore ways of transforming their research into dynamic creative outputs.
Programme overview
Students will attend an opening workshop at Warwick to formally launch the programme, where they will gain experience and skills in research and in innovative ways of presenting their findings. All students will be entered into a competition to win £500 and have their work displayed at the University of Warwick

Opening Workshop – 26th January 2018
· The workshop will feature lectures delivered by academic staff at Warwick looking at the theme of Colonial Hangover and the everyday legacies of the British Empire.
· There will also be a number of breakout sessions preparing students for their own mini research projects. These will cover: Colonial Legacies and Names; Sports and Culture; Religion and Colonialism; Security and Spies; Political Geography.
· All students will attend a session on presentation skills and will then choose between sessions on: Essays; Spoken Word; Photographic Essays/Academic Posters.

Undergraduate Mentoring
Throughout the entire process students will get regular support from their mentors, not only at the workshops but also online while they carry out their research and plan their dissemination. Mentors will guide them through a number of ‘Milestones’ (e.g., literature review, research design, analysing findings) to make sure they keep on track and get as much out of the programme as possible. In addition, all students will receive online library access at the University of Warwick.

Student Conference – 22nd June 2018 Having researched their topics and selected and planned their method of dissemination, students will return to Warwick for a final Student Conference. Here they will present their research to other students on the programme and get a chance to discuss each other’s projects.
