Experience Warwick Year 10 Summer School

The University welcomed 41 young people on its Experience Warwick Yr. 10 residential Summer School at the beginning of July, from Experience Warwick Partner Schools in Coventry and Warwickshire as well as nationally through our UniTracks Programme, for an action packed four days offering a variety of academic and social activities. Participants took part in academic session ranging from Economics to Film and Television Studies, were faced with complex legal and moral issues in the Law session, grew a slime maze in the Life Science session and got to experience some explosive Chemistry.

They also attended a number of non-academic sessions, learnt how to debate and present their arguments, started exploring what they’d like to study and took part in the Sumer School Group Challenge which was to repurpose a space on campus for students to use and start up a business. Each group presented their ideas in a five minute presentation to their parents, careers and teachers at the end of the Summer School as well as a panel of judges with the winning group receiving a first class trip to London. The judges were incredibly impressed with all the ideas and the level of work produced however the winning groups Arabian Nights themed spa and social enterprise blew them away.

There was also a varied social programme including a chance to go on the climbing wall, take part in ‘The Cube’ which was a mix of different individual scored challenges, F1 Soap Box Challenge where participants had to construct and customise their own Soap Box cars and finally the Gala Dinner.

The participants really made the most of the Summer School actively participating in everything we asked them to do and supporting each other’s involvement, we asked the participants to sum up their experience in three words ‘Absolutely positively amazing’ ‘Fun, rewarding & memorable’ ‘Delicious, okay and my voice is gone’ ‘Magical engaging awesome’.
