Parents and Carers

If you are unable to attend any events that may be hosted at your school you are more than welcome to visit our Thinking About University site for more information.

Things for you to bear in mind when helping your young person think about university:

  • Keep track of your child's applications, UCAS and student finance deadlines!
  • Make lists of important questions to ask on open days. Accompanying your child on visits to prospective universities is a good idea, two pairs of eyes are better than one.
  • Think about types of accommodation - on-campus, off-campus, catered or self-catered?
  • Don't assume that you know everything, facts and figures change year on year.
  • Remember to check if accommodation is insured. In many cases, buildings will be insured but personal possessions won't. If your child/guardian has any valuables with them - laptops, mobile phones, jewellery, televisions, it is a good idea to make sure they are covered by the appropriate insurance.
  • Keep positive but don't encourage your child to make snap decisions. Try to ensure they have looked at all possibilities before committing to a course or institution.
  • Remind your child that their student loan should not be spent all at once. Helpful budget calculators are available.
  • Different places of Higher Education suit different personalities. Make sure they visit and do some research

Here are our downloadable factsheets that have been created by our team to give you the best advice to support your young people on their journey into Higher Education.
