Summer School Staff Support

The Widening Participation team are excited to offer the opportunity to staff to join us in supporting Warwick's Summer Schools 2020 programme. During the three summer schools listed below, we will be welcoming over 200 school pupils on to campus to gain an insight in to living away from home at university. By offering your time in support of these summer schools, you can really make a difference to a young person’s life, gain experience of large scale event management and work with our current student ambassadors.

The Summer Schools are:

Summer School Year 8 Boys 'Gradu8' Summer School 
Date Sunday 28 – Tuesday 30 June 2020
Participants Participants: 30 year 8 males from Coventry & Warwickshire area
Roles available 2 staff required - 1 evening staff support and 1 overnight male staff support

Summer School

Year 10 'Experience Warwick' Summer School
Date Wednesday 8 July - Saturday 11 July 2020
Participants 42 students - mostly local - Coventry and Warwickshire
Roles available 2 staff required - 1 evening support staff and 1 overnight male staff support
Summer School Year 12 Sutton Trust Summer School
Date Monday 27 - Friday 31 July 2020
(with the option to join the group for an evening meal on Sunday 26th July)
Participants 120 year 12 students from across the UK
Roles available 2 staff required - 1 evening support staff and 1 overnight male staff support

Shift timings and details:

  • Evening shift – 5.30 pm -11.00 pm

Staff will be asked to take a lead on delivering pre-arranged evening activities. This will involve facilitating social activities whilst ensuring all students are engaged. These activities could include encouraging groups to play outdoor and indoor games (e.g., rounders, football, Frisbee, cards); and helping to organise groups for organised activities (such as sports centre activities). A full briefing on role and these activities will be given in advance.

  • Overnight shift – 5.30 pm – 11.00 pm + on call from 11.00 pm - 8.00 am (Only male staff required for this shift)

Following undertaking the evening shift role (as outlined above), staff will remain on site and stay in summer school accommodation overnight. You will be on call overnight and may be called on for additional staff support if something were to happen which needed staff input. You’ll join us for breakfast the next day before returning to your usual ‘day job’.

Staff skills and knowledge gain:

Skills 

  • Time Management– you will be working on our summer school programme after your normal day-job has finished!
  • Flexibility and Adaptability– Switching from one job-role to this one; being asked to do
  • Leadership – Organising groups to do activities; working with the student Group Leaders
  • Interpersonal – a key part of the role is building a rapport with the summer school participants, and the current Warwick students
  • Problem Solving– this role requires the ability to think on your feet and solve problems! (For example, how to entertain 120 17-year olds when the technology fails you when you’re trying to show a film!)

Knowledge of … 

  • What being a young person is like at the moment – the challenges, concerns and aspirations they have
  • A greater understanding of the importance and purpose of widening participation work in Higher Education.
  • What the student experience is really like!

Pay and Toil:

  • Grades 1-5:
    overtime pay for the evening shift (usually 5:30 pm -11:00 pm) plus a discretionary overnight payment for each overnight shift
  • Grades 6+:
    TOIL for the evening shift (5:30 pm -11:00 pm) plus a discretionary overnight payment for each overnight shift

It is advised that you talk to your current line manager to before registering your interest in supporting the summer schools to ensure they are happy for you to be involved and understand the reimbursement process.

If you are chosen for an evening shift you will be free to leave site at the end of your shift. If however you would like to stay on site overnight, we can offer you accommodation but please be ware that you would not receive an overnight payment for this.
